Cybersecurity is an increasing priority for many businesses. The NIS2 Directive, Network and Information Security Directive, adopted by the European Union since 2020, focuses on improving the digital and economic resilience of European member states.
NIS2 expands the scope of the (first) NIS directive by covering more sectors. It also sets stricter security standards and incident reporting requirements.
From the end of 2024, the Directive must be transposed into national legislation. It is therefore important for organizations covered by NIS2 to properly understand the regulations and take the necessary actions.
Understanding the Directive
- NIS2 introduces concrete controls that organizations need to take to improve their cyber security.
- The EU directive defines two categories of entities and simplifies the scope with a list of 17 sectors.
- In particular, it mandates risk management practices, incident reporting procedures and security policies.
- The controls will not only affect internal operations, but will also extend to the organization’s service providers.
- Organizations should already start their journey to compliance and allocate the necessary budget and resources in anticipation.
